After 13 years, nine long-players and one “visual album” featuring band members washing eggs in a brook, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Animal Collective, it’s to expect the unexpected. And yet we were still taken aback by the follow-up proper to Merriweather Post Pavilion. It’s pop! Ok, ok, so it doesn’t inhabit quite the same sonic plain as Rihanna et al, but out of a schizophrenic, psychedelic jumble of live instrumentation and samples, the Baltimore boys have conjured up an abundance of peculiar earworms. Featuring founding member Deakin, and inspired by the forgotten radio transmissions bouncing about in space, Centipede Hz may well be their most accessible album to date.
