He may not have won the title of Sound of 2011, but if there’s an artist bringing more innovative music to the mainstream, we’re yet to hear of it. On this, his feverishly anticipated debut album, James Blake strays further from his dubstep roots to produce a new and deeply affecting breed of mournful, singer-songwriter electronica, first hinted at on last year’s ‘Limit To Your Love’. The soulful timbre of his voice is augmented with vocoders, and replicated to produce almost choral harmonies that shimmer above glitched rhythms, and erratically pulsating synthesizers. A truly awe-inspiring listen, Blake has successfully delivered on his early promise in this impressive showcase of his prodigious talent.
