Hard to believe, but it’s been over a decade since Kate Rusby’s second album Sleepless received a Mercury Prize nomination, narrowly missing out to Talvin Singh’s OK. In the interim she’s consoled herself by greedily racking up BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and establishing herself as a prolific talent, releasing a further seven albums. Only now however, 13 years since her debut, has Rusby finally gained the confidence to release an album of entirely original compositions. She needn’t have worried: Make the Light is an absolute treat, showcasing those mellifluous tones, surely capable of turning Laura Marling green, and proving “the Barnsley nightingale” to be a songwriter nonpareil – or thereabouts…
