Oh, how the mighty have fallen: once a seemingly unstoppable pop force, Cheryl Cole went from being revered as a platinum-selling superstar to being mocked an American Idol-reject, back in May. So, with the “nation’s sweetheart” currently away (licking her wounds and working on album number three) her Girls Aloud band mate, Nicola Roberts, has courageously stepped in to fill the breach with her solo debut. Interestingly, where Cole took the well-trodden R&B route, Cinderella’s Eyes sees Roberts veer thrillingly off-piste, taking with her a crack team of collaborators that includes Metronomy, Dragonette and Diplo. The result is a barrow-load of dizzyingly inventive and satisfyingly wonky electro-pop, that sees Roberts give new mileage to the description “pale and interesting”.
