Despite receiving a warm critical reception for the Tom Petty-esque Americana of their debut, it’s probably fair to say The War on Drugs are still most famous for having fostered the burgeoning talent of one Kurt Vile. Three years since his departure, the Philadelphians look set to change all that with their second long-player. Where Smoke Ring For My Halo delighted with its down-at-heel lyrics and lo-fi aesthetic, the expansive Slave Ambient has its eyes firmly set on the stars, featuring psychedelic, space-rock synth textures and Adam Granduciel’s captivating, Bob Dylan-via-Richard Ashcroft tones. Truly an album to get lost in.
