Further Complications

Some things never change, though. Few can match Jarv's handiwork with a lyrical couplet, and in 'Leftovers' especially there's much to savour. One of the real highlights is found in closer 'You're In My Eyes (Discosong)' where, along with the similarly excellent 'I Never Said I Was Deep', previously-scaled heights are revisited again over a disco background and a solid-gold chorus. Even 'Homewrecker!' and the groove-filled 'Fuckingsong' succeed despite having nothing specific to say, both keeping the rock quota up and providing opportunity for Cocker to experiment with a more feral vocal approach.

It takes a lot to move into new musical territories, much less come out the other side relatively unscathed. Further Complications certainly isn't without its trappings, but there are enough successes here to chalk this up as another fine album by someone fast becoming a national treasure. Even if he does live in France.
