Joy Division
Joy Division virtually defined the term "post-punk". They combined punk's rawness and iconoclasm with an artier sensibility that encompassed poetic lyrics, existentialism, and a dark moody mix of guitars and keyboards that was a major influence on goth and industrial music. After singer Ian Curtis's tragic suicide in 1980, the rest of the band reconvened and went on to enjoy international success as the poppier, more electronic-oriented New Order. On May 17 2007, CONTROL, a film about the life and death of Ian Curtis debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, the day before the 27th anniversary of Curtis' death. Directed by Anton Corbijn, the famed Dutch music video-maker had photographed the band in the late-1970s.
