After the split of cross-genre U.K. indie/punk trio Test Icicles, member Devonte Hynes traveled to the Omaha, Nebraska, to record, plucking the name Lightspeed Champion, a reference to a comic book hero he created as a child, for use as an alias. His move proved no coincidence; as a solo artist, Hynes explores his own twisted but sweet lo-fi universe in a manner akin to the city's most famous export, Conner Oberst. However, his 2008 debut, FALLING OFF LAVENDER BRIDGE, reveals an artist who creates music that's deliciously hard to define, hemmed in by no predecessor yet utterly accessible.
