Pavement
Originators of the "lo-fi" alternative rock sound, Pavement set the course for college rock in the 1990s. Their skewed, shambolic guitar pop, slacker vocals, and dense wordplay endeared them to those disenchanted by lumpen grunge sounds. Over time, they became more polished, but never lost their edge. After Pavement's break-up at the end of the '90s, singer/songwriter Steve Malkmus began the inevitable solo career and guitarist Scott Kannberg started the rather Pavement-like Preston School of Industry.
