Unique among the crop of early-2000s post-punk-inspired bands, Glaswegian quartet Sons & Daughters put a unique spin on their Au Pairs/Gang of Four-influenced sound by injecting an unusual quotient of country and blues touches. While the settings on the band's debut EP, LOVE THE CUP, are as stark as anything on an early Wire album, theirs is also the minimalism of early Johnny Cash, complete with train rhythms and Luther Perkins-like guitar riffs (if any more proof were needed, one song is simply titled "Johnny Cash"). Interspersing doses of mandolin and bluesy riffs amid the angular, choppy guitars further suggests that Sons & Daughters have been listening as much to the ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC as they have to Young Marble Giants. In an era of retro-worshipping dead ends, LOVE THE CUP offers an interesting alternative.
