The Software Tester has no line management responsibilities.

    Purpose:
    The purpose of the Software Tester role is threefold; To define the Testing Strategy for the Company’s product set; To ensure the delivery of a quality product and; To coach developers in the adoption of automated testing frameworks.
    Responsibilities:
    Within the context defined above, the responsibilities of a Software Tester are as follows:

  • To define and maintain the Testing Strategy for the Company’s product set and to be able to clearly communicate it to other members of the development team at all times.
  • To engage with product teams to aid them in working towards achieving the testing goals as defined in the Testing Strategy document.
  • To ensure appropriate testing frameworks are adopted for projects delivered by the Development team.
  • To work with members of the business to draw up requirements that are testable.
  • To coach and assist developers in their adoption of automated testing frameworks.
  • To ensure that they are up to date on all relevant developments in automated testing.
  • Experience and Skills:

    Core Skills:

  • Formal Functional Testing (evidence may include ISEB Testing Certificate, Test Plans, Test Scripts)
  • Automated Testing (evidence may include Fitnesse, Selenium, Watir, Rspec, Watin)
  • Development Background (evidence may include C#, Java, Ruby)
  • Database Querying / Scripting (evidence may include SQL, T-SQL)
  • Essential Skills:

  • Issue Management Application (evidence may include Jira, FogBugz)
  • Continuous Integration (evidence may include Cruise Control, NAnt, MSBuild, TeamCity)
  • Version Control (evidence may include SourceSafe, Team Foundation Server, CVS, Subversion)
  • Agile Development Lifecycle (Scrum, XP, RUP)
  • Desirable Skills:

  • Business Analysis
  • Web Service / SOA Testing
