With all eyes on the Sugababes in today’s entertainment media, the public are eagerly waiting to find out if they will be a triumphant Keisha-free success or an embarrassing Jade-fuelled flop.
Despite a new member being shoehorned in after a top ten smash solo career (on the Eurovision leader board at least) Britain’s most successful female act of the 21st century could lose their chart-dominating crown to colourful new upstarts The Saturdays. We take a look at the girlbands of yore to see how likely it is that the Sugababes will continue their success. Read »

2009 has been described by pop pundits as ‘the year of the woman’; signaled by the flamboyance of Florence and the Machine, electro pop falsetto La Roux, the continuing dominance of Beyonce and the everlasting cool of Karen O, to name only a few.
It’s been a damn good year for the girls, but let us not forget their musical mothers: for every Laura Marling there has been Joni Mitchell, before Beyonce came Tina Turner and it was Deborah Harry who wore the original rock ‘n’ roll cool, before Karen O picked it up at a vintage store. Here we celebrate them all »

It came as pretty exciting news that The Faces were to get together for a charity reunion gig last week. Not so cool, though, that Rod Stewart, his leather trousers and his hair wouldn’t be there to do their thing. (Rod sings.) Instead the gig went ahead with guest vocalists.
So it comes as even greater new, then, that, according to Rod’s mouth, a true Faces reunion gig (minus bassist Ronnie Lane – who died on 1997) is very likely to happen. He told CNN that his erstwhile bandmates went ahead with the reunion without him because he’s promoting his new album Songbook. "Hopefully, I'll get me old job back. It's on the cards. I'll do it eventually.”
If you don’t know their stuff, make sure you check out The Faces, who formed when the majority of the Small Faces were joined by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood from the Jeff Beck Group. Their key-filled, blues-rock was some of the rawest and greatest around.

Spandau Ballet have put aside their differences, recorded a new album and begun paving the road with Gold again. 90s indie-rock legends Pavement are also doing some gigs for the first time in ten years – one of which, it seems, will be at ATP in May, a festival which they are also curating. Sugababes are still going without any original members, but the original members are said to be in talks about reuniting. (Get your head around that.) Oasis have split, but we all know Liam and Noel will one day be in the ring again. Robbie’s entertaining us again, too. (Don't even think about it, DJ.) And of course the Take That lads he deserted some years ago got together again for one of the most successful returns we have ever seen. The point of all this? Bands and artists come and go (or sort of go quiet for a bit), but quite often, they come again – they come back. They call it a comeback.
So, next time your favourite band or artist decides to call it a day there is no need to call that special helpline they specially set up to listen to you cry, just cross your fingers and give them 5-10 years – they’ll probably be back, in some shape or other...
TIP: If you are ever caught cheating by your loved one, ensure their comeback by reciting Pato Banton word for word, mimicking his style, rhythm and tone as he charms his way out of his relationship trouble one minute into his classic collaboration with UB40, for their cover of Baby Come Back. Then a little kiss. How can it fail? Please note: Pato was wrong to cheat.

Remember John Barnes’s rap in New Order’s 1990 World Cup song, the best football song ever, ‘World In Motion’? Yes, you do. It was really good. That boy can rap. Well, according to The Sun, Peter Hook, the band’s bassist, says the ex-footballer might be up for re-recording it for a new 2010 World Cup version. Imagine how good he will be now, 20 years later. That’s a lot of practise time.
Apparently Beckham came close to recording his take on it once upon a time but it fell through last minute, thankfully - it’s John Barnes’ gig, he owns that rap. Only Kanye could do it better but, alas, he doesn’t do football. But if he did, he’d probably be the best footballer in the world.

Two pretty big things happened in the world of music – no, the world - this week. First, there was the announcement that Keisha has left Sugababes, leaving no original members. Then we hear that Dave Peacock has left Chas & Dave, unable to continue after the death of his wife. Unlike Sugababes, though, who will be continuing with new member, Jade Ewen, Chas and Dave will not be continuing without Dave.
But what if Chas did audition for another Dave? And what, then, if Chas left, and then the new Dave got a new Chas? Could Chas & Dave continue without the original members, like Sugababes? Preposterous, perhaps. But is it preposterous that Sugababes are doing it? Former member Mutya Buena reckons so, saying to 6music, “To me it just means the Sugababes have ended really, not in a bad way, but because there are no original people remaining.” But we aren’t so sure.
The members of Sugababes, like the cast of a long-running musical, or the Dragons in Dragon’s Den, are, now, dispensable. Whilst there is always the possibility of the ‘classic lineup’, it is the concept of Sugababes, like that of the musical, or Dragon’s Den, that holds the ultimate value and not the individual ‘players’ - now, that is. In the beginning each member was a vital component in the creation of the Sugababes concept. In those days, those members were the concept; they gave birth to it and amongst them they shared a sort of Sugababes D.N.A.. But once this concept, which included the song writing and production style, became strong enough, and the first member was replaced, it became clear that this D.N.A. – this Sugababeness - could be shared with a new member, that Sugababes was, in fact, a brand; a company, even, where performers could come and go.
And we are soon capable of forgetting the original line-up, just as you probably can’t remember the original line-up on Dragons Den (seriously, things have changed in there!). Of course Keisha was crucial to the creation and success of the group, but she is not necessarily crucial to their success now; there are two remaining, non-original, members capable of inducting Jade into the group, training her up to be a Sugababe, in the same way they were trained. And, naturally, the song writing and production style can continue, just as it is possible to get different writers working on a T.V series, adopting the style of the show.
Sure, it remains to be seen whether they can continue for long without Keisha. There might be a public backlash, the fans might not tolerate it; Keisha might have been to Sugababes what Mark E Smith is to The Fall (ha), without whom there is no band; or it just might ‘not be the same’. But we are simply saying that there isn’t anything essentially wrong with a band like Sugababes continuing without its original members. Chas & Dave couldn’t do it, though. They’re Chas & Dave. It would be preposterous.

The lineup of Mark Ibold, Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West is reuniting for dates around the world in 2010.
The hugely influential and much revered indie band have been politely suffering questions on the possibility of their reformation for around a decade, now they can look forward to a good year of ‘will you be staying together after the tour?’ instead.
The first show announced is a New York performance on September 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. The general on-sale is slated for 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2009.
In case you didn’t know, Pavement were and, we're sure, will be very good indeed. If you don’t have any of their music and you like your indie authentic, lo-fi and charmingly off-kilter then you have some serious gaps in your collection.

Kanye West has apologised on the Jay Leno show for being a massive tw*t (twit) and stealing Taylor Swift’s golden moment at the VMAs the other night. He came across as sincerely apologetic and troubled, explaining that he was working too hard, and pausing heavily before answering Leno’s sometimes reproachful questions.
In a spectacle that was reminiscent of a piece of staged wrestling trash-talk, Kanye burst onto the stage at the MTV video awards as Taylor Swift collected her award in the category of Best Female Video for ‘You Belong With Me,’ which beat Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)’. ‘Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!’ he excreted.
Mental. If it weren’t for that fact he made such good music he wouldn’t be allowed to get away with it. Damn it, he knows this.

South London rapper Speech Debelle took the esteemed Mercury Music Prize last night for her album Speech Therapy, overcoming strong competition from more established favourites like Friendly Fires and Florence and the Machine.
The prize, with the shortlist and winner chosen by a panel of critics, celebrates the best of British music and focuses on album quality rather than sales. Debelle was a relative unknown before the award, shifting only 3,000 albums to those in the know. Expect that to change...

Heard that new Mika track and wondered where you've heard something like it before?
If you can bear the squirm inducing sight of the odious, prancing Mika and his needlessly bare torso being rubbed in your poor, poor face, then watch on, it’s actually quite funny this. Well done to its creator, you have achieved the impossible: making Mika look even more ridiculous.
