Welcome to the Morrissey shop.

Poised for his V. Festival headline slot later this month, Morrissey releases 'In The Future When All's Well' on Sanctuary/Attack on August 21st.

The third track to be taken from Morrissey's eighth solo album 'Ringleader of the Tormentors', 'In the Future' is a somewhat paradoxical affair. Sonically speaking, it remains an upbeat, crashing, riff-driven rock and roller...primetime 'Ringleader' Morrissey...yet optimism remains the bedfellow of a darker, more inward-looking underbelly. 'Armed with wealth / and the best of health / in the future when all's well' rings out Moz in the opening lines. Forward-looking? Optimistic? Contented? Surely not. And sure enough, things are never that simple...

References to death in this vista of the 'future' do indeed spot the lyrics ('I will lie down and be counted/In the future when all's well...The future is ended by a long, long sleep'...). Yet the track isn't wholly taken with plunging to those dark depths - these are after all, strangely comforting allusions. As ever, Moz is nothing if not a somewhat melancholic realist. Projecting to a time to come when 'all's well', fears are confronted, and life's issues are resolved, is all well (pardon the pun) and good. Standards and predicted outcomes have no place in Morrissey's world however ('In the future when is all's well / paired-off / pawed - till I can barely stand it'). Expectations, it seems, can be stifling - the only real certainty, in the truest sense, is death. And there is strangely enough, by Morrissey's code, something reassuring in that.

KRISTEENYOUNG

Coming highly recommended by Morrissey himself (he recently wrote of her on fan site truetoyou: "Kristeen, I think, will soon be bigger than life. To me, she already is."), KristeenYoung - Morrissey's recent touring partner - is to release her first UK (limited edition) single 'Kill The Father', also on August 21st.

Like a kindred-spirit Kate Bush of the new century, her dark, dissonant sound draws its roots from two things, at least in part: escaping her Christian fundamentalist upbringing and a childhood obsession with forcing her mother's old piano to sound like the electric guitars on the radio. Half-Apache, Kristeen was raised in St. Louis, Missouri by her adoptive parents, a hairdresser and a grocery-store employee. Try as they might to save her soul, Kristeen had other plans. Today her unique sound, intense presence and sharp lyrics create a stunning performance, both on stage and within her recordings.

Kristeen's first album was released in 1997. "Meet Miss Young and her All Boy Band" (the boy in the band is, incidentally, drummer Jeff White) introduced audiences to her aggressive rhythms, distorted keyboards and phenomenal voice. The album was released on World Domination Recordings, the Los Angeles label founded by post-punk icon and Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen. Their next album, 1999's "Enemy" ended up in the hands of legendary producer Tony Visconti. Halfway through the second track, Tony called Kristeen with an offer to record her. The initial demo tracks eventually became her 2003 album, "Breasticles," which was produced by Visconti and featured a duet with David Bowie (Young had recorded backing vocals for his album "Heathen"). Kristeen followed it up with solo tours of parts of Europe and London, as well as a stint opening for Frank Black. In 2004, Young released 'X' (pronounced 'ten'), which featured a duet with Brian Molko of Placebo, in the US and Europe. As well as doing the honours on Morrissey's recent European tour, Kristeen has also opened for Frank Black.
