From Jaz-O showing Jay-Z how to rock the microphone, Large Professor mentoring a young Nasty Nas & Birdman reaching out to a teenage Lil Wayne, there’s a rich history of successful mentor/protégée relationships that we all have something to be thankful for. 

Taking a look at the careers of some of the biggest names in the game, DJ Target explores the importance of the mentor/protégée relationship in urban music; with a little help from Katy B, Big Daddy Kane, Jaz-O, Hot 97 presenter Peter Rosenberg, Tinchy Stryder, NO ID, Wretch 32, JP & Hyperfrank, Ms Dynamite and Fuse ODG, Jay Z and Kanye West.

Whilst investigating the schemes in place to help young aspiring UK artists, Target heads down to a rap workshop at Audio Active in Brighton (above), the Youth Music funded mentoring scheme where Rizzle Kicks cut their teeth before getting their big break.
