7digital announces global HD music partnership with hi-fi giant Onkyo

Press Release

e-onkyo music service to expand internationally using 7digital’s platform

London, 30 May 2014: 7digital, the world’s leading open digital music platform, and Onkyo, one of the world’s foremost creators of innovative home entertainment products, announced today that they have entered into a global partnership. Together they will bring e-onkyo music, the most successful high definition digital music store in Japan, to Europe and the US.

An extensive upgrade to 7digital’s platform and catalogue will create the most comprehensive service offering of HD digital music content available. The e-onkyo music services will begin to roll out in the coming months.

Says Ben Drury, co-founder and chief strategy officer, 7digital: “Over the last decade, we have set the standard in simplifying access to digital music for our partners and their customers. With the introduction of our HD digital music portfolio we hope to reconfirm 7digital's position as a leader in high quality digital music services. There is a global demand for higher definition digital music and it’s exciting to have such an internationally-recognised and respected industry brand as Onkyo as our first major partner in this space.”

As part of the deal with Onkyo, 7digital will be responsible for all music rights negotiations, content management and reporting. Onkyo will use the advanced capabilities built into the 7digital technology platform and growing FLAC catalogue to ensure Onkyo device users have seamless access to high fidelity audio systems.

Says Shinsuke Yamashita, President, Onkyo Entertainment Technology Corporation: “We feel strongly that consumers deserve to hear their favourite music in clear, clean and crisp sound. Our e-onkyo music service launched in 2005 in Japan and we are now delighted to bring the successful service to consumers in Europe and the US. There is no better partner to do this with than 7digital, whose long-standing expertise and dedication to high quality is second to none.”

Concludes Mr Drury: “We have always been focused on transforming the way people listen to and engage with music through connected devices. The upgrade of our catalogue and partnership with a premier global brand such as Onkyo keeps us both at the front of this HD music revolution.”
